The past few weeks have been unusually hot, and students have had to adjust their daily routines just to stay comfortable. Adh-Dhikr Press asked students what has been working for them. Their responses are presented below.

With the intense heat lately, I have been taking conscious steps to stay cool and healthy. I drink plenty of water throughout the day, avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, and wear light, breathable clothing. I also try to stay in well-ventilated areas and reduce strenuous activities during peak heat hours. These little adjustments have really helped me cope better.

— Qowiyah Yakub, Department of Zoology

With the intense heat these days, I'm actually taking a lot of measures to cope. I usually go to class everyday with a bottle of water and whenever I get to class, I try as much as possible to sit close to the window or sit beside someone with a fan. I also avoid wearing thick clothes most of the time.

— Fathia Olayiwola, Department of Pharmacy

These past days have been hot intensely, and to make matters worse, the electricity has been a little bit unstable, this unstable electricity has made the heat unbearable. I keep all windows open at night, drinking room-temperature water often helps, and I take cool showers whenever possible. It’s a struggle, but these small habits keep me going.

— Abdulmuiz Adegboyega, Department of Civil Engineering

With the intense heat these days, I have been trying to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, reducing unnecessary movement under the sun, and wearing light clothing. I also rest whenever the weather becomes too stressful. In addition, I avoid playing Football during the afternoon to prevent heat exhaustion.

— Qudus Ajiboye, Department of Industrial and Production Engineering

With the intense heat lately, I have been trying to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun, especially in the afternoon. I also wear light, breathable clothing and use a fan to stay cool indoors. Whenever possible, I take cool showers twice daily and sleep in lighter clothing. These are my simple ways of coping with the intense heat.

— Abdulhamid Zakariyyah, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology

The heat these days has been quite intense, especially in the classroom where it can get very uncomfortable. To cope, I make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. I also use an electric hand fan during lectures to keep cool. In addition, I avoid wearing thick clothes and choose lighter outfits. These simple measures have helped me manage the heat better.

— Ganiyat Ojewunmi, Department of Computer Science

With the intense heat these days, the measures I have been taking are wearing light clothes inside my jilbaab, holding a hand fan ALWAYS, and staying hydrated. I try not to stay in crowded places or small spaces. The game changers for me are the hand fan and the water.

— Mozeedatul-khayr Fasasi, Department of Industrial Chemistry

Sometimes I keep myself hydrated, even though water is now expensive or I go to places where there are fans or I take fresh air.

— Aisha Alabi, Department of Library Archival and Information Studies

I have been coping by the grace of Allah, because He is the one that owns the rainy season and the dry season, and He did not impose what is too heavy for His servant. When I am outside and feeling the heat, I fan myself with a hand fan and drink a lot of water to keep hydrated. When I am inside, I find where the air is coming from and sit there, but sometimes when there is no air, I endure and use my hand fan. In all, I think the body knows how to adapt to the season.

— Karimat Maruf, Department of Microbiology

To cope with the heat, I make sure to drink water regularly and carry a reusable bottle with me. I limit outdoor activities that are not compulsory to early morning or evening when it’s cooler, and I use a hand fan or stay in shaded areas. I also take cool showers and eat light meals with lots of fruits. Staying indoors during midday really makes a difference.

— Maryam Ige, Department of Microbiology

Due to the recent extreme heat, I've been focusing on staying hydrated, steering clear of the sun during peak hours, and opting for light, breathable clothing. Wearing the hijab, I've found that modest, loose attire can aid in regulating body temperature by shielding the skin from direct sunlight and promoting airflow. Over time, I believe the body adjusts to these conditions. Alhamdulillah, maintaining a calm and mindful attitude also enhances my ability to manage the heat. Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance between practical measures and inner tranquility.

— A'ishat Omileye, Department of Health Education

Coping with the intense heat we're experiencing now, I make sure that I always have water with me to keep myself hydrated. I avoid wearing thick cloth so as to avoid excessive heat. Reducing the rate at which I walk under the sun so as to bridge the radiation I can see that this one too works very well for me. Anytime I feel uncomfortable, I always find a tree to sit under.

— Ahmad Salaudeen, Department of Physiotherapy

To cope with the intense heat these days, I have been taking several practical steps to stay comfortable and healthy. I make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration, and I try to stay indoors during the hottest hours, especially in the afternoon. Wearing light, loose-fitting clothes also helps me stay cool. I use a fan or air conditioning whenever possible, and I take cool showers to reduce body temperature. Additionally, I eat more fruits and avoid heavy meals during the day. These measures help me manage the heat better and stay active.

— Basit Adebisi, Ansarudeen College, Ogun state
