August 07, 2025The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU) has warned students of an outbreak of myiasis, also known as human botfly infestation, after recent cases were reported within the university community.
The warning was contained in a statement jointly signed by the UI’SU House Secretary, Adeyemi Oluwaseun, and the Chairman of the UI’SU Health Advisory Committee, Oladimeji Muheez.
According to the statement, the cases reported are under control and affected students are receiving medical care.
“These cases are under control, and affected individuals are receiving proper treatment,” the statement read.
UI’SU urged students to watch for symptoms such as painful or itchy swelling resembling a boil, a sensation of movement under the skin, a small central hole on the swelling, and possible pus or fluid discharge.
The union also advised students to use insect repellents regularly, avoid sleeping outdoors, maintain good hygiene, keep rooms free from stagnant water and insect breeding sites, and seek medical attention immediately if they notice unusual skin swellings.
