October 27, 2026The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) has expressed concern over the recent felling of trees on campus, warning of severe environmental and welfare implications for the University community.
This was disclosed in an official notice released by the Union on Monday, 25th October, 2026.
While acknowledging that tree removal is sometimes necessary for infrastructural development or safety considerations, the Union stressed its environmental and welfare implications, particularly as the campus experiences intense heat and changing weather conditions.
The Union emphasised the critical roles trees play in maintaining a healthy campus environment, citing their functions in providing shade, regulating temperatures, supporting biodiversity, and improving air quality.
“We therefore believe that the preservation of the University’s green spaces should remain an important consideration in decisions affecting the campus environment,” the Union stated.
According to the notice, the Students’ Union has engaged the Students’ Affairs Division and the Dean of Students to seek clarification on the ongoing activities and explore possible measures to address these concerns.
Furthermore, the Union emphasised its advocacy for a pause in avoidable tree felling during this period of intense heat, while also calling for clear justification, appropriate environmental assessments, and replacement planting wherever tree removal is unavoidable.
The Union reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with University Management, expressing confidence that a balanced approach would be adopted to meet institutional needs while protecting the interests and well-being of the University community.
