In commemoration of the 2024 convocation and and 76th Anniversary of the University of Ibadan, the University Muslim Community held a Special Jumu'ah at her central mosque on Friday, 8th November.

Delivering the Jumu'ah sermon, the Chief Imam of University of Ibadan, Prof. M.O Abdul Rahmon obliged the graduating students to value time, manage opportunities and contribute positively to the community and Nigeria at large.

Referencing Quran 41:19 on the alternation of day and night, the Chief Imam emphasized the need to make the best use of every moment "Allah has blessed us with the gift of life," he said "each day, each hour and minute is an opportunity we must seize to prepare ourselves for the greatest examination- the Day of Judgement."

He highlighted how important is the management of time and opportunities. He stated that professors, lecturers, non-academic staff and students must utilize every moment productively.

The sermon shifted to the issue of brain drain now termed "Japa Syndrome": the trend of talented Nigerian citizens leaving the country in search of greener pastures.

The Chief Imam spotted the fact that the nation is facing challenges and the challenges could be surmounted only if we can come together to solve the problems together with our skills, the expertise and commitment.

Addressing the graduating students, he reminded them of their duty to themselves and their community because the nation has done its part.
"Nigeria has done its part to train you. It's your time to give back. Do not run away from the country. Even if you want to Japa, you must find a way to look back and sponsor some children to school. Your duty is to utilize your knowledge and skills for the betterment of yourself and your society," he added.

Following the Jumu'ah service, the University Muslim Community together with the University Management held a special convocation prayer at the Islamic Centre of the Central Mosque.

The event, filled with prayers, speeches, and reflections; brought together dignitaries, lecturers, students, and administrators in a spirit of gratitude for the University 76th anniversary.

The program began with an opening prayer by Prof. I.O. Uthman, Assistant Imam I of the University, who emphasised the importance of gratitude in faith and in daily life. This set a reflective tone for the event.

The Vice Chancellor’s speech, delivered by Prof. P.O. Olapegba on behalf of Prof. K.O. Adebowale, conveyed appreciation for the support of the University of Ibadan Muslim Community and the Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria (MSSN). The address also acknowledged the challenges facing the community, pledging open communication and collaboration between the university administration and the Muslim Community to address these issues.

The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Prof. M.O. Abdul Rahmon, led the convocation prayers, invoking blessings for preservation and protection of the community and the graduates.

Closing remarks were anchored by Prof. S.A. Bankole, Chairman of the University of Ibadan Muslim Community Executive Council, who delivered a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation for the support and unity demonstrated at the event.

As refreshments were being served among the attendees, the program concluded with a closing dua by Dr. K.A. Omofoyewa, Assistant Imam II of the University, who offered prayers for continued blessings and success for the graduates and the university community.
