UI Chief Imam Urges Steadfastness
Azeezat Maruf
July 06, 2025The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Muftau Abdulrahman Oloyede, has urged Muslims to remain steadfast, citing the excellence of the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as their source of strength.
Speaking during the Jumu‘ah service on Friday, 4th July, 2025, at the UI Central Mosque, the Chief Imam emphasized the excellence of the final revelation, Al-Qur’an Kareem, bestowed upon Prophet Muhammad (SAW), describing it as a scripture that can never be calculated, edited, or substituted.
He focused particularly on the revelation of Suratul Yusuf (Surah 12), which, he said, was revealed during a deeply painful period in the Prophet’s life.
He recalled that during that time, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had lost his uncle, Abu Talib, who used to shield him from the torture of the Quraysh, and his beloved wife, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, who served as his comforter. With both protectors gone, the Quraysh intensified their persecution of the Prophet and his followers.
According to the Chief Imam, the revelation of Suratul Yusuf served as a reminder to the Prophet of the trials faced by Prophet Yusuf (AS) at the hands of his own brothers. The comparison was meant to inspire perseverance and reliance on Allah’s timing.
Professor Oloyede also addressed the importance of intention in worship and deeds. He stressed that all actions should be done solely for the sake of Allah, not for worldly gains.
He cited the example of pilgrims performing Hajj, advising them to undertake the journey with sincerity and with the intention of fulfilling a pillar of Islam, not merely for seeking answered prayers or accessing sacred water.
“No matter what we are going through, we should not renounce our faith. Rather, we should become more steadfast in our religion and understand that it is a test from Almighty Allah, which will pass,” the Chief Imam said.
