The Impact of Social Media on Students' Academic Performance
Khosiah Saheed
July 15, 2026Social media refers to online platforms that enable people to interact, share ideas, exchange information, and connect with others across different parts of the world. In recent years, social media has become an essential part of students' daily lives. Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram are now commonly used by students for different purposes.
Students use social media for many reasons. Some students use it for educational purposes, while others use it for entertainment, communication, and relaxation. Through social media, students can join academic groups, attend online tutorials, watch educational videos, and share academic materials with classmates and friends. It also helps students stay informed about current events and developments around the world.
One of the positive impacts of social media is that it makes learning easier and faster. Students can easily search for information online whenever they are given assignments or research work. Social media also improves communication between students and teachers because information can be passed quickly without stress. In addition, students can learn new skills through educational content shared online.
Despite its advantages, social media also has negative effects on students’ academic performance. Many students spend too much time chatting, watching videos, or browsing unnecessary content instead of focusing on their studies. Excessive use of social media can lead to distraction, poor concentration, and a lack of seriousness towards academics. Some students even become addicted to social media, which affects their reading habits and examination performance.
Furthermore, social media can expose students to cyberbullying, misinformation, and other harmful activities that may negatively influence their behaviour and academic life. When students fail to manage their time properly, social media becomes more harmful than beneficial.
To reduce the negative effects of social media, students should learn how to manage their time effectively. They should use social media mainly for productive and educational purposes and avoid spending too many hours online unnecessarily. Parents, teachers, and school authorities should also guide students on the proper use of social media.
In conclusion, social media has both positive and negative effects on students’ academic performance. When used wisely, it can improve learning, communication, and access to information. However, when abused, it can become a major distraction to academic success. Therefore, students should maintain a healthy balance between social media use and their academic responsibilities.
