The Call for Shariah: A Path to Justice and Societal Revival
Aakifah Dokpesi
May 16, 2025In the face of moral decay, corruption, and injustice, the call for Shariah in Nigeria is not merely a religious aspiration but a necessity for societal rejuvenation. As crime rates soar and economic instability deepens, it is crucial to embrace a system rooted in divine justice. Shariah, the comprehensive legal framework ordained by Allah, offers practical solutions to contemporary challenges.
A Foundation for Justice
At its core, Shariah ensures absolute, impartial justice. Unlike human-made laws that are often manipulated, Shariah guarantees fairness. In Nigeria, where corruption prevails, a just legal system is vital. According to the Port Harcourt Journal of History & Diplomatic Studies (2023), Shariah's resurgence in Northern Nigeria has reinforced legal accountability. Implementing it nationwide would prevent the powerful from evading justice while safeguarding the rights of the weak.
Economic Stability and Social Welfare
Nigeria faces deep economic struggles, including poverty and unemployment. Shariah provides an economic framework that fosters fairness and redistribution of wealth. The institution of Zakat (mandatory almsgiving) ensures that wealth circulates among all citizens. The prohibition of Riba (usury) protects people from exploitative lending practices, which trap them in perpetual debt. Ethical business principles under Shariah discourage fraud, hoarding, and financial speculation, fostering a just economy (Port Harcourt Journal of History & Diplomatic Studies, 2023).
Moral and Social Reformation
The erosion of moral values in Nigeria is evident in broken homes, rampant immorality, and rising drug abuse. Shariah upholds values that preserve family unity, modesty, and social responsibility. It establishes laws that curb immorality, ensuring individuals and communities live with dignity. According to the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, "Shariah law has reduced crimes in nations where it is practiced" (Leadership, 2025). The discipline it instills restores social harmony, creating an environment where respect and responsibility thrive.
Security and Crime Reduction
Crime remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing concerns. From theft and kidnapping to corruption, insecurity is rampant. The Shariah system enforces strict yet just punishments that deter crime. Unlike the current judicial system, often plagued by bribery and weak enforcement, Shariah ensures swift justice. The presence of a strong, uncompromising legal framework discourages criminal activity and promotes a safer society (Leadership, 2025).
Addressing Misconceptions
Critics often portray Shariah as oppressive, but such misconceptions stem from ignorance. Shariah is not a system of blind punishment — it prioritizes justice, mercy, and social well-being. Punishments are enforced only when guilt is proven beyond doubt, and conditions often favour rehabilitation over retribution. In addition, Shariah applies to Muslims and does not seek to oppress any group. Professor AbdulRazzaq Alaro highlights that opposition to Shariah in Southern Nigeria arises largely from misunderstandings (The Nation, 2025).
A Call to Action
Nigeria stands at a crossroads. We can either continue on the path of moral and social decay or embrace a system that upholds justice, ensures economic stability, and revives ethical values. The call for Shariah is not about extremism but about fairness, security, and restoring dignity to society. The time for hesitation is over — it is time to embrace Shariah.
