Tahajjud: A Means of Spiritual Elevation
Tohir Najmudeen
July 02, 2025In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. May His peace and blessings be upon the noble Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his family, his companions, and all those who follow his way until the Day of Judgment.
Allah, the Almighty, states in the Holy Qur'an:
“Their sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and hope…” — Surah As-Sajdah (32:16)
“And wake up during the night for extra prayers, so your Lord may raise you to a station of praise.” — Surah Al-Isra (17:79)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer (Tahajjud).” — Sahih Muslim
“Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night…” — Sahih Bukhari & Muslim
Tahajjud is a voluntary night prayer that the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged. It is offered after Salat al-Isha and before Fajr. The most virtuous time for it is in the last third of the night, when Allah's mercy is closest.
To perform Tahajjud, make wudhu (ablution) and intend to pray the night prayer. It is typically performed in units of two rak'ahs, with no set upper limit, though the Prophet (peace be upon him) often prayed between two and eight rak'ahs.
Importance of Tahajjud
1. Allah Honors and Praises Those Who Pray at Night: “Their sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and hope...” — Surah As-Sajdah (32:16)
2. A Means of Drawing Closer to Allah: Standing up at night when others are sleeping is a profound way to connect with Allah, especially during a time when He is exceptionally close to His servants. “The closest a servant comes to His Lord is during the last part of the night…” — Sahih Muslim
3. The Habit of the Prophet (peace be upon him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never abandoned Tahajjud, even when he was sick or tired, exemplifying its profound importance. “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer (Tahajjud).” — Sahih Muslim
4. Acceptance of Du'a (Supplication): The last third of the night is a special time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks:
“Is there anyone asking Me so that I may give him? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness so that I may forgive him?” — Sahih Bukhari & Muslim
5. Increases Faith and Status Before Allah: Tahajjud elevates our spiritual rank and strengthens our faith in the sight of Allah. “And wake up for prayer during the night, as an extra (nafl) offering for you; it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.” — Surah Al-Isra (17:79)
Incorporating Tahajjud into your routine, even with just a few rak'ahs, can bring immense inner peace and strengthen your connection with Allah.
