Smart Ways to Save on Campus
Hikmat Yusuf
December 29, 2025At the University of Ibadan, managing finances has become a daily challenge for many students. With the rising cost of food, transportation, and academic materials, adopting smart saving habits is now more important than ever.
One effective way students manage their money is through budgeting. Allocating allowances into categories such as food, transportation, and academic needs helps reduce wasteful spending.
Another cost-saving strategy is cooking in hostels. Buying meals daily from hostel cafeterias can be expensive, whereas cooking with roommates and purchasing foodstuffs in bulk from markets proves more economical.
Transportation also accounts for a significant portion of students’ expenses. Opting for the UI tricycle at ₦200 or trekking short distances instead of taking drop rides helps reduce daily costs over time.
Academically, students can save money by borrowing books from the Kenneth Dike Library or sharing textbooks with friends rather than purchasing every required material.
In addition, avoiding impulse spending plays a crucial role in saving. Asking simple questions like, “Do I really need this?” before buying snacks or non-essential items can prevent unnecessary expenses. Saving as little as ₦100 daily in a kolo (saving box) can accumulate into a substantial amount for emergencies.
In conclusion, saving money on campus requires discipline and wise decision-making. Through proper planning, cutting down unnecessary expenses, and consistent saving, University of Ibadan students can stretch their finances further and reduce financial stress.
