Scholar Urges Muslims to Uphold Islamic Principles of Marriage

An Islamic scholar, Ustadh Abdulmojeed Zakariyyah, has called on Muslims to embrace the divine principles guiding marriage, describing nikah as a sacred institution established by Allah to foster tranquillity, affection and mercy between spouses.

He made the call during the Spiritual Night programme held on Thursday, 30 July 2026, where he delivered a lecture titled "The Compass of Union."

In his lecture, Ustadh Zakariyyah explained the Islamic concept of marriage and outlined the conditions that distinguish a valid marriage from invalid unions.

He noted that a valid marriage establishes legal rights and responsibilities between spouses, including inheritance rights, proper lineage for children and the observance of iddah after divorce or the death of a spouse.

Quoting Surah Ar-Rum (30:21), the lecturer stressed that marriage was instituted by Allah to provide peace, love and mercy between husband and wife.

He also reminded intending couples that marriage requires financial responsibility, urging men to ensure they can provide shelter, clothing and maintenance before getting married.

According to him, marriage protects believers from immorality, helps preserve chastity, contributes to the growth of the Muslim Ummah and attracts divine rewards when conducted according to Islamic teachings.

Addressing spouse selection, the Islamic scholar encouraged Muslims to prioritise piety and good character over wealth, beauty, or social status.

He warned against premarital relationships, describing boyfriend-girlfriend affairs as contrary to Islamic teachings and urged Muslims to abstain from zina.
