Scholar Urges Muslims Not to Engage in Gambling

An Islamic scholar, Ustadh Abass Bayonle, has urged Muslims not to engage in gambling and anything related to it.

Ustadh Abass Bayonle gave this advice during the Spiritual Night held on Thursday, 11th September 2025, at the University of Ibadan Central Mosque, where he spoke on the topic “The Vague in Vogue.”

He emphasized that it is forbidden in Islam to torment oneself and that Muslims should know how to manage their souls because they are lent to them by Almighty Allah.

Speaking further, Ustadh Abass noted that many people nowadays engage themselves in betting and gambling, citing the recent crash of CBEX as an example.

He then quoted a Hadith: “Indeed, the lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters which many people do not know. Whoever avoids the doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honour.”

He went on to highlight the Maqasid As-Sharia, which are protection of religion, protection of life, protection of intellect, protection of wealth, and protection of lineage or honour.

The scholar further advised Muslims to safeguard their faith and not give room to anything that could ruin their religion.

He referred to Suratul Kafirun, verses 1 to 6, revealed when the nonbelievers attempted to bargain with the Prophet SAW concerning religion.

Ustadh Abass also stressed the importance of protecting one’s wealth, quoting another Quranic verse: “Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been ungrateful to his Lord.”

He explained that Allah has forbidden Maysir (gambling) because it destroys the two trusts given to man, wealth and health.

According to him, many youths today have fallen into the trap of digital sports betting, chasing illusions while losing both their deen and dunya.
