The Last Day We Never Knew
Yasiroh Shittu
July 09, 2026It all faded slowly,
silently and patiently,
like the moon disappears
amidst the clouds.
It did not give us
a hint or a heads-up,
because that would be the end.
Just like other days,
we played and laughed.
On this day, we tarried a while,
but life had a surprise for us —
"The last time."
This was the surprise.
We went inside on that day,
only to come out to a new beginning
the next day.
We never knew that was the last day.
Life did something quite unfair,
yet, at least, we accepted it,
not because we had healed,
but because we believed
life would bring it back.
But then, life had its way again.
The only thing
it eventually brought back
were memories,
while introducing us
to the unspoken rules of a new world,
where tomorrow
becomes something to fear
rather than anticipate,
and our toys become memories
instead of companions.
I once sat and looked back in time,
hoping for those moments
to come again,
but reality whispered,
"You are in another world called adulthood."
Then it became clear to me:
while childhood was slipping slowly,
we were busy learning
the silent customs of adulthood.
