July 08, 2025The Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria, University of Ibadan (MSSNUI), has hosted a podcast discussion that explored the divinity of the Qur'an, delving into its unique characteristics and timeless guidance.
The episode, titled "The Qur'an: A Divine Book or Human Creation?", featured two guests,Imam Haneef Zakariyah and Imam AbdulKareem Taofeek, who shared perspectives on the subject.
According to the guests, the Qur'an's divine origin, timeless guidance, and linguistic prowess set it apart from other religious texts.
Imam Haneef explained that the Qur'an is the Word of Allah, revealed over 1400 years ago, and still serves as a guiding constitution for mankind.
Imam AbdulKareem highlighted the uniqueness of the Arabic language in which the Qur'an was revealed.
The guests also shared the origin story of the Qur'an, explaining that it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) at around age 40, after he had been perfectly chosen by Allah.
Haneef recounted that the Prophet (SAW) would often visit Cave Hira to reflect on Allah, and it was there that the Angel Jibril (AS) appeared to him, reciting the first five verses of Suratul 'Alaq.
Regarding the documentation of the Qur'an, the guests explained that despite the Prophet Muhammad's unlettered status, Allah chose some of his companions, such as Ali bin Abi Talib and Zayd bin Thabit, for this task.
Haneef highlighted the miracle of the Prophet's ability to correct the companions whenever they made mistakes in writing the Qur'an, despite being unlettered. This documentation majorly happened during Uthman Bin Anfal's regime.
The guests also addressed misconceptions that the Prophet copied The Qur'an from previously revealed books, and that Waraqah Ibn Nu'fal taught the Prophet Qur'an.
They explained that the Prophet was unlettered so he couldn't have copied previous books, and this was a time when there was no plagiarism. The Qur'an was revealed for over 24 years after Waraqah's death so he didn't teach the Prophet.
They emphasized that the Prophet disapproved of Umar reading the Torah and told him that The Qur'an is sufficient for us.
When asked how to respond to questions of doubts about the Qur'an's divinity, the guests advised seekers of knowledge to approach The Qur'an with an open heart, abstain from ignorance and arrogance, and surround themselves with knowledgeable people.
They encouraged people to read and understand The Qur'an without prejudice, emphasizing that reading The Qur'an in seclusion while concentrating on it, makes it speak directly to one's heart, so there's no way anyone would miss its divinity.
The hosts, Ibrahim Olubode and Yusuf Obikoya, encouraged the audience to apply the knowledge gained and follow the teachings of the Qur'an.
