September 30, 2026Newly appointed officials of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, University of Ibadan (MSSNUI), and Akinyele Area Council (MSSNAAC) have been urged to foster unity and strengthen collaboration with the University of Ibadan Muslim Community.
This call was made during the orientation session for new officials, held at the Oladipupo Musa Abdul Civic centre, University of Ibadan central mosque on Monday, 28 September, 2026.
The session, moderated by Yusuf Obikoya, featured Dr. Mikail Abdulsalam who described Muslim Staffs as the “local parenting” body of Muslim students.
Dr. Abdulsalam further noted that the Student Advisory Committee exists to monitor MSSNUI programmes, so as to safeguard the interests of Muslim Students on campus.
He urged the officials to work hand-in-hand with the UI Muslim Community and assist in uniting the Muslim ummah, while encouraging them to avoid segregation.
Dr. Abdulsalam also highlighted the role of the Student Adviser in regulating the affairs of Muslim students, urging the officials to maintain communication with the Imams, whom he described as being closest to members of the Muslim community.
“This is our home. Let’s make that home habitable to everybody,” he said.
Also speaking at the session was Engr. Abdulkabir Alamal'Yekeen who emphasised the importance of understanding the responsibilities attached to leadership in MSSN.
"What you don't know will be difficult for you to practice" he said, noting that understanding one’s duties is essential to carrying them out effectively.
He further urged the newly appointed officials to study the constitution and familiarise themselves with their respective portfolios.
Engr. Alamal'Yekeen traced the establishment of MSSN to 30 May, 1954, explaining that it was founded to provide Muslim students with a platform to protect and strengthen their faith.
He also reminded the executives that the MSSN Constitution is based on the Qur’an and Hadith and urged them to respect the Ameer or Ameerah, regardless of age or personal considerations.
According to Engr. Alamal'Yekeen, leadership in MSSN is a responsibility before Allah, warning the officials against actions that could undermine the organisation’s work. He also reminded them that they would be held accountable for their responsibilities.
He emphasised the importance of good character, urging the officials to accommodate Muslims who may not be well-oriented in Islam or familiar with MSSN activities. Rather than ignoring such members, he encouraged the leaders to engage them and help them experience the positive values of Islam.
“You should accommodate other Muslims that are not oriented or don't know about Islam. Don't ignore them; you should change them for the better,” he advised.
Engr. Alamal'Yekeen further reminded the officials that their conduct would be observed by other students. He urged them to remain conscious of their responsibilities as representatives of MSSN.
He further called for tolerance, encouraging them to work together despite their differences.
Engr. Alamal'Yekeen concluded by urging the newly appointed officials to study their assigned duties, understand their roles and build genuine friendships among themselves as they begin their tenure.
