Maryam Abidemi launched her autobiography, "My Hijab Journey," on May 18, 2025, at the Islamic Centre, University of Ibadan Central Mosque.

The event, which attracted distinguished personalities from across Oyo State, marked the unveiling of a deeply personal narrative detailing Maryam’s steadfast commitment to Islam, despite her parents' departure from the faith. The book chronicles her struggles, her decision to remain firm in her Muslim identity, and her refusal to convert to Christianity, despite intense familial pressure.

"My Hijab Journey" was reviewed by renowned author Hajia Lateefah Adewumi Jumuah, popularly known as Lajfingers. Describing the work as “a courageous and soul-stirring autobiography,” Lajfingers highlighted the protagonist’s unwavering commitment to Islam despite emotional trauma. She drew parallels between Maryam’s bravery and that of Sumayyah bint Khayyat, the first female martyr in Islam.

“She did not write this book to glorify her pain,” Lajfingers noted, “but to give voice to others who may be silently enduring the same trials.” She concluded her review by emphasizing that the book “deserves to be read, shared, and celebrated.”

In his remarks as guest speaker, Ustadh Ali Abdulsalam commended the chief host, Ustadh Hashim Abdulrasheed, for his sincere support of the author and the programme’s success. He also addressed moral lapses among some Muslims on social media, stressing that modesty must be reflected not only in dress but also in speech and behaviour—by both men and women.

“The hijab is not merely an outfit; it is an attitude and a lifestyle,” he said. He urged Muslims to remain unapologetically committed to the commandments of Allah, without hesitation or compromise.

Several notable figures graced the event, including Chief Saheed Oladele, the Baameko of Ibadanland; Alhaji Kunle Sanni (represented by proxy and by his wives); Engr Tajudeen Hamusat, Chief Imam of The Polytechnic Ibadan; and Dr Rafiu Adisa Bello, director of Al-Irfad Islamic Centre, Oyo. Many others attended to support and celebrate the inspirational book.

The launch of "My Hijab Journey" not only honoured the resilience of one young woman but also served as a powerful reminder of the strength of faith, identity, and community in the face of adversity.
