Like its description, the biggest public speaking event in sub-Sahara Africa, Jaw War welcomes all students- Muslims inclusive- from all walks of the premier University. The event is an apt definition of edutainment with a balanced mix of intellectual speeches with bants, music to lighten the mood, and audiences’ chants for their preferred constituencies. It’s hard not to be entertained at Jaw War.

However, a concerning trend is emerging as Muslims especially females are beginning to compromise their religious stance and modesty in the midst of this entertainment. As the music echoes through the halls of Jaw War and the enthusiasm of participants reaches new heights, it is unfortunate that the line between spirited engagement and Islamic values becomes blurred. It becomes a sore to the eyes when Muslims indulge in singing, dancing, and jumping on tables in the name of excitement.

Thus, it becomes a necessity to remind ourselves to uphold the principles of modesty and decency. More importantly, that the pursuit of worldly pleasure should never overshadow the ultimate goal of spiritual well-being. While it is okay to attend edutainment events like Jaw War, it is also crucial to know that the modalities of entertainment cannot be controlled thus the need for a balance.

It is pivotal to learn not to lose oneself in the face of fun. It is noteworthy that more Muslim speakers have graced the stage of Jaw war 2024. Thus, we encourage Muslims to engage in the event’s intellectual discourse, showcase their talents, and contribute meaningfully to the vibrant atmosphere – all while maintaining their commitment to modesty and Islamic values.

In the spirit of unity and understanding, we hope to emphasize that participation in events like the Jaw War is not incompatible with maintaining one’s faith. It’s a call to embrace the diversity of experiences without forsaking the core principles that define our identities – being a Muslim.

Jaw War 2024 can be a catalyst for positive change, a platform where Muslims can also shine intellectually while still upholding the principles that guide them on their journey towards the Akhirah.
