Must you rely on stimulants just to stay awake? Energy drinks are beverages typically containing high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants like guarana, taurine, and B vitamins. They are widely promoted as products that increase energy and enhance mental alertness and physical performance. It is no surprise that the so-called energy drinks, boosters, coffee, and similar products are also stimulants, as they contain caffeine. While stimulants like caffeine may provide temporary benefits, their long-term effects cannot be ignored.

Last session, a large number of patients admitted to Jaja were freshers preparing for their first-semester exams. More than half of them were admitted due to caffeine-related issues, which led to increased heart rates, jitteriness, and anxiety, while a few were diagnosed with malaria.

Yes, caffeine may help students stay awake and focused during late-night study sessions and may also enhance cognitive function, particularly attention and reaction time. However, this doesn't make it harmless; it has adverse effects on the biological system. Frequent use can lead to dependence and negative side effects.

"Slow poisoning kills better than a quick shot." This emphasizes that a gradual, persistent issue or problem can be more damaging, and ultimately lethal, than a sudden, violent event. Consuming high amounts of caffeine has been linked to an increased risk of conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.

By quitting caffeine, you may lower your risk of developing these conditions and improve your long-term health. High amounts of caffeine can contribute to liver damage, especially when paired with alcohol, and may cause digestive issues. In addition, cardiovascular risks, such as increased heart rate, high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), and potential heart failure, are associated with energy drinks. All these risks should be prevented in order to live a good life in old age.

Now that we know the dangers associated with taking energy drinks, why don't we consider healthier alternatives? Opt for natural boosters like exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet. Take breaks while reading; regular breaks can help manage fatigue, and frequent stretching can increase alertness. Find healthy ways to cope with stress, and drink plenty of water throughout the day. By incorporating these strategies, you can reduce your reliance on stimulants and maintain your energy levels naturally.

Remember, "slow poisoning kills better than a quick shot."
