It goes without saying that the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic session began on Monday, 25th August, 2025. For finalists, this semester is their final lap on campus. For freshers, it is their second semester, a continuation of the journey they began a few months ago. For other students, it is a continuation of their pursuit of knowledge and experience at the University of Ibadan.

The second semester signifies many things. It is usually filled with a variety of activities such as social, spiritual, educational, and informative programmes.

For example, the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, University of Ibadan (MSSNUI), has lined up several programmes this semester in addition to its regular weekly activities. These include the Sisters’ Seminar, Paper and PowerPoint Presentation, Communication Seminar, Brothers’ Forum, Jihad Week, and Adh-Dhikr Press Magazine Launch, among others.

Aside from MSSNUI programmes, there are numerous other activities organised by faculties, departments, associations, and the Students’ Union. These include faculty weeks, association dinners, hall dinners, pageantry, and beauty contests. For non-freshers, these events may be familiar, but for freshers, this will be their first experience of such a packed calendar.

Dear freshers, while it is good to refresh your mind and enjoy campus life, you must be mindful of the programmes you attend. Always bear in mind Islamic standards and attend only programmes that will contribute positively to your growth. Avoid those that waste your time and distract you from your primary assignment on campus.

This is a reminder to all students: spend your time wisely. Draw lessons from previous years and apply them this semester. Remember, the session is not over yet. If you felt something did not go well last semester, you still have an opportunity to make amends. Work harder on your courses and aim for better results. Never forget that your sessional CGPA is a product of both semesters.

In addition, please prioritize self-care. Academics can be demanding, and challenges may arise, but your physical, emotional, and mental health are just as important. Rest when needed, seek help when necessary, and do not suffer in silence.

Another feature of the second semester is politics. Student politicians will approach you for support, canvass for your votes, and ask you to join their mobilization teams. While engaging, always stay alert. Make decisions that you will be proud of later. Do not compromise your values or go against the dictates of Almighty Allah.

Dear students, welcome once again to the second semester. This is a fresh chance to maximize your time, attend beneficial programmes, avoid distractions, and take your academics seriously. With focus and discipline, you can make this semester both fulfilling and rewarding.
