Each new week of the semester brings students closer to academic goals, but also tests their spiritual resilience. As students walk through the gates of the University of Ibadan, rushing from lecture halls to libraries, from assignments to group meetings, they often forget that while they feed their intellect with knowledge, their spirit too is in dire need of nourishment. The semester is not only a test of memory and intellect; it is also a test of faith and resilience.

Allah reminds in the Qur’an: “Indeed, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest” (Qur’an 13:28). Yet, how many students remember Allah when they are overwhelmed by schedules, deadlines, and examinations? The irony of student life is that in seeking knowledge, they sometimes neglect the very foundation upon which knowledge is blessed: their relationship with Allah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) lived a life that balanced worldly duties with devotion. Despite carrying the heavy responsibility of guiding mankind, he would retreat in the stillness of the night, rising in prayer until his feet swelled. When asked why he exerted himself so, he replied: “Shall I not be a grateful servant?” (Bukhari & Muslim). If the Messenger of Allah, whose sins were forgiven, never let the busyness of his mission drown his devotion, what excuse would students have when they neglect their daily prayers or postpone them for the sake of lectures?

Dear students, the path to spiritual balance in the midst of academic demands is neither abstract nor unreachable, it is practical and necessary.

First, guard your ṣalāh. No matter how tight the lecture schedule is, when you prioritise the five daily prayers, you find not loss but blessing in your time. As one scholar beautifully put it, “When you give time to the One who owns time, He puts barakah in what remains.”

Second, do not underestimate the power of dhikr. A quiet subhānallāh whispered between pages of lecture notes, an alhamdulillāh uttered after submitting an assignment, or an Allāhu akbar breathed in the stillness of the night; these seemingly small acts weigh heavily on the scales. They anchor the heart, keeping it steady amid academic storms.

Third, spiritual balance requires guarding your intentions. Why are you here? Why do you endure the rigours of study? If your pursuit of knowledge is detached from its ultimate purpose of seeking Allah’s pleasure and using knowledge in His service, then your degrees, no matter how polished, will remain empty certificates. The student who studies with the niyyah of benefitting the Ummah, of becoming a vessel of service, transforms every late night of reading and every lecture attended into acts of worship.

Dear students, the semester is a marathon, not a sprint. Fatigue, stress, and even failure may visit along the way. But do not allow these trials to rob you of your spiritual anchor. Instead, hold tighter to the Qur’an, carve time for reflection, and build habits of consistent remembrance. The real success is not the highest CGPA, but leaving this campus as Muslims whose īmān has grown, not withered, through the journey.

May Allah grant you steadfastness, increase you in beneficial knowledge, and beautify your academic pursuits with barakah. May He make this semester a means of strengthening your īmān and a ladder to His pleasure, and not a distraction from His remembrance.
