Campus Hustle: Challenges and Opportunities of Student Business

Starting a business on campus is becoming common among students. Many young people want to earn extra income and gain experience while studying. However, this journey is not always smooth, as it comes with both challenges and opportunities.

One major challenge is time management. Students already have busy schedules with lectures, assignments, and exams. Running a business alongside can be stressful. Another challenge is lack of capital. Most students depend on allowances from home, so raising money to start and expand a business is difficult.

In addition, school rules sometimes restrict selling within hostels and lecture halls. Students also face competition, since many others may be selling the same products. Finally, many lack proper business knowledge, which makes it hard to manage profits and customers.

On the other hand, there are also great opportunities. A university provides a ready market, as students have daily needs such as food, clothes, and academic services. For example, the akara stand beside Abdul Salam Abubakar Hall in the University of Ibadan started on a small scale but has now grown popular. Many students patronize it regularly, and it generates steady profit for the seller. This shows how a simple idea can succeed if well managed.

Campuses also offer networking opportunities, where students can partner with others who have useful skills. Running a business further helps to develop skills like leadership, communication, and financial management. In addition, the rise of digital platforms makes it easy to advertise and reach customers at little cost.

In conclusion, doing business on campus is not easy, but it is rewarding. The challenges of limited time, money, and competition exist, but the opportunities for growth, income, and experience are even greater. With creativity and discipline, students can successfully balance school and entrepreneurship together.
